Hiking is something I truly enjoy. There is nothing better for me than to have my movement create a symphony with nature and to truly enjoy the sights and sounds. Living in harmony with nature is my life’s mission. Left alone, I would probably be dwelling in a forest.
However those that have walked with me would have a different story. They would probably comment on how slow I move or how many times I get stuck along the way. Lot of times, this may not make sense as to why I get stuck when I was moving ok the minute before.
The mind-body disconnect is really difficult to explain. It is almost like your TV remote that stops working after accidentally pausing the video. My mind works overtime as your fingers would on the remote, but my body would be stuck like the video.
There are sometimes contributing factors to this such as sensory overload, sickness, physiological factors such as hunger or lack of sleep. But it is really hard to exactly say what hits the pause button accidentally.
The next time you go out for a walk with someone like me, please pack a lot of patience and understanding. And don’t ask me or my parents/other caregivers for explanations even with the best intentions. Just let things be.
