Motor initiation mostly occurs when the mind and body communicate well. Lot of times that does not happen. Our bodies need to be trained to do certain things. I gave the hiking example previously.
Another one is that my body does not pick up the letterboard automatically when I need to communicate. My parents need to pick up cues from my unreliable speech sometimes to clarify on the letterboard. Or they bring it to me when they need to ask for my thoughts or feelings and to have a conversation.
Motor initiation certainly takes a lot of work. What has helped me the most is some very specific motor coaching. Like following step by step instructions to keep my mind connected to the body. Move your left leg forward, turn your hips around, look at the door etc are some specific examples. Lot of times, our body can only move the smallest incremental step. So these instructions may need to be further broken down. Like lift your leg as opposed to move forward.
This can escalate likely due to a couple of reasons. One if we are being rushed or physically pushed. Second, if we sense frustration in the tone of the voice of the person coaching the body. And finally not picking up on our cues to modify the instructions but instead repeating the same thing over and over again and contributing to our sensory overload.
I was often misunderstood to be avoiding a demand or being lazy previously. It cannot be farther from the truth as we now know well. Hopefully this post opens a few more eyes.
