My love for reading started long before I got my autism diagnosis and got lumped in with my tribe that is not believed to be capable of doing anything, leave alone reading and comprehension. I learnt to read on my own. Initially through books we read as a family and later through all possible sources. One of my favorites used to be subtitles on TV. That was a very helpful source to help put things together.

My strength for pattern recognition helped me learn from many of these disparate sources and understand the contextual meaning of these seemingly indecipherable group of letters. Our visits to libraries and other places like that helped reinforce some of the learning. My mind is capable of picking up languages due to some of these other inherent strengths.

Just moving on like my mind is incapable of reading and comprehension used to be the world around me. Let that not be the case for your loved one. Please trust that your loved ones are fully capable of reading and have possibly already figured it out on their own.
